Elk too, is no unfamiliar car. The story started here: The Elk - An Aircooled Volkswagen Type 182 [ O \ |_|_| / O ] as a quest to make Elk the Pakistan's Most Complete Aircooled VW and is going to be carried further on here.

Stay tuned while I update this introductory post and later the related updates in the quest.

Time to move ahead with the quest to put together pakistan's most complete Aircooled VW ever. The history of the quest can be read here: pakwheels.com

I dont think that I have mentioned that a couple of weeks back I bought the Driver's Side Heating Duct Protection Plate (goes on the tunnel over the heating ducts running from the rear of the car towards the front and over to dash defrost vents) alongwith the two missing dash panel mounting hinges for the centre dash panel from Daniel in USA.

Both the parts arrived today and great shape. The protection plate is sadblasted, primed and painted and is ready to bolt on. So are the dash panel mounting hinges which still have the OG screws on them. Pictures:

Among other news, Elk is now 100% road legal, with all road taxes paid and road insurance in order. When I acquired Elk, the last road taxes paid were upto Dec. 31, 2008, with no road insurance history.

Getting Elk road legal and transferred to my name was one priority that I didn't want to turn my head from. So sent the book first to KHI for paying up the road taxes and getting the insurance in order. Costed 12,150 to update everything related to road taxes and insurance. Then sent the book to Azad Jammu Kashmir where it was transferred to my name and only this noon, I have received the book fully updated with all the details transferred to my name....Hurrah!

The 2nd package from Curt/USA carrying all four wheels brake cylinders for Elk has arrived today as well, concluding the deal with the supplier (for now). These are all made in USA brand new cylinders as for now, it seemed way out of budget for me to buy the German ones.

Owning VW Trekker has bestowed upon me many friends from all over the Europe. John is one of them and is located at UK. We got connected over the FB and when he saw me striving to put together the most complete Aircooled VW of the country, he offered his help, starting from his own Trekker stash. Following items are his contribution and would arrive in early May;

Two Convertible Roof Canvases, One army green and the other white;

All military & dash switches, dash pads, dash pods, VDO gauges with mounting panel, grab handle and windscreen latches from this military dash cut-up;

Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Dashcu11

This 75 Steering wheel;

And these heater tubes protection sheets, pair left & right, picture taken from samba for reference as original is still awaited from John

Elk came with a mexican two tip muffler installed with pea shooters with the original muffler lost sometime during its life before it reached me. Had to replace it but the OG VW181 mufflers are hen's teeth and if found, cost an arm and a leg. But this once I got lucky and bought this piece for $60 (plus shipping).

It has the Fresh Air units missing but thats no biggie. Any fresh air units can be put on from another fresh air muffler and thats exactly how I plan to do it once it arrives.

PostSubject: The Time of The Safari has Come   Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari EmptySat Mar 02, 2013 4:07 pm

Time to enjoy the safari has arrived. With winters dying down and spring sprouting out of cold, today, I parked off Patina into its hiding and brought home Elk. Lots of cleaning is required before its ready to roll out as my daily driver for next one month or so.

Then there are many parts that are waiting to be loaded on to it since they have been arriving thick and fast for last three months from all over the world, with as many on their way to me as I type this post.

As of yet, I still have to fold down the vert top on Elk and enjoy its drive with windscreen/vert folded down for the first time ever since it was bought in October 2012.

Stay tuned as we embark on to a journey of slapping ready to go on parts on Elk in the days to come and as the story unfolds about its completion.

Exciting times ahead. Smile

PostSubject: Main Wire Loom Cover/Hella Accessory Dash Socket/Hazard Switch   Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari EmptyThu Mar 07, 2013 10:25 am

I have bought from Dan in the past. He ships quickly and his parts are exactly the way he describes them. Always a pleasure to deal with this US Thing guy but today he surprised me with his attention to details.

Received today is this package that contained the Correct OG VW Thing only Main Wire Loom Cover (goes on the tunnel to cover the main wire loom that runs along it), OG Thing Only Hella Accessory Dash Socket with 181 Part number and a spare OG Thing Correct Hazard switch with knob.

Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Img_4510
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Img_4511

And here is why he surprised me. This small envelop below contains the OG retainer screws of the wire loom cover but thats not what is surprising. The surprising element is that I bought dash hinges with screws from Dan previously (can be seen in the post in the start of this thread) and the hinges came with screws and washers but there were only 3 washers available when they arrived. A tiny issue so It was never discussed b/w us but today when this package arrived, the envelop carried the missing fourth dash hinge washer in it! Now, wont you deal with a seller like this again? I would, always!

OG Bay window rear view mirrors with Extensions to fit the VW181s.

Thing mirrors are hen's teeth and are very hard to find and if they are there, they are as pricey as much as a beetle itself here in Pakistan so will have to choose something of the sort which you see in below;

The used bits bought from Julian Robinson of Parts Emporium UK have arrived after a couple of months to me just a while back. All parts are in the exact shape they were bought/sent in except the under the dash large RHD VW181 cardboard vent that got damaged and broke during transit. Nothing to blame on Julian since he packed the parts really well. Its just that my courier mishandled the package during this long transit.

Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3326

Note the torn up Large Cardboard under the dash Vent. Unfortunately this was the only RHD (VW182) dash vent set that was available anywhere. So now this large piece will have to be fabricated in fibreglass using this original damaged piece as a diecast sample.

P.S.: Special Thanks to Sameer who coordinated the dispatch of parts from Julian to Pakistan as Julian doesn't directly send the parts to Pakistan. Wouldn't have been possible without you @Sameer, obliged!

Military Windscreen Cover: Is in good shape, has all straps in tct too, just has a paint blot on it which will clear out just fine with a little effort.

Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3329

Military Headlight: Is in very good shape too, just doesn't have the beam otherwise perfect. A little black paint overspray on the headlight ring but thats no biggie will clean out perfect.
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3330
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3331

Military Ignition Coil Resister: In overall good shape, will need to be tested though
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3332
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3333

Gun Mount: Its the 8th missing gun mount that I needed after I had bought the gun mount set of 7 from Poland. Found it with Julian so was bought to accompany other bits to complete the gun mount set of 8.
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3334

Under the Dash RHD VW182 Only Defrost Tubes/Vent Set:
Small/Passenger side piece; this one is in perfect shape and would go directly on Elk
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3335

Large/Driver Side piece; was damaged during transit and would need to be fabricated / mended somehow locally
Aircooled - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari Sam_3336

Pair of Sunvisors: Torn and battered, would need local refurbishing, no biggie. Just wanted the frames so there they are. The repro ones are costly as hell so went for this cheaper option of acquiring these torn ones to be locally refurbished

Probably the most difficult part to find in a RHD Thing/Trekker/Safari (VW182) resto is to find the RHD ONLY wiper motor and assembly. And no, its no verbosity, ask those who are looking for this part for YEARS (literally) now and without any gain.

Elk came with all but wiper motor. According to PO it was lost during repaint job long ago and was never recovered. Top of my WANTED list was the RHD "Only" & Thing "Only" wiper motor. After a wreckless search of 06 months I located one in the other corner of the world.

Blessing of being globally connected: Here is the rarest of rare; a working 74-up complete RHD wiper assembly with motor bought for hefty sum equal to price of a BEETLE here in Pakistan!
