First topic message reminder :

Elk too, is no unfamiliar car. The story started here: The Elk - An Aircooled Volkswagen Type 182 [ O \ |_|_| / O ] as a quest to make Elk the Pakistan's Most Complete Aircooled VW and is going to be carried further on here.

Stay tuned while I update this introductory post and later the related updates in the quest.

PostSubject: Disappointing End to Swapping out of Externally Regulated Alternator with Internally Regulated Alternator   socket - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari - Page 3 EmptyMon May 06, 2013 1:34 pm

Elk came with Motorola Externally Regulated Alternator which needed bearings replacement for long. Since I came across a New Internally Regulated Alternator from KHI last week, so I swapped out the old one for the new one, in my porch.

Once I had hooked it all up, I started Elk to my disappointment that it was not charging the battery as the idiot light didn't go off. Took Elk to electrician and he checked it to same result as well.

Loss of money and effort, both Sad

Will swap back to the externally regulated Motorola later tonight.

PostSubject: Replacing CV Boots and Servicing the CV Joints   socket - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari - Page 3 EmptyMon May 06, 2013 4:20 pm

Elk's undercarriage, right before its passing to me, was pretty neglected. Lot of grey areas which needed attention. I was putting it all off due to the fact that I was busy with work and all. But I felt it would be a crime to neglect it any further, especially after getting Elk's undercarriage washed and getting to know the grey areas even better. There are quite a few but we would be discussing two of them here especially, at the moment;

One: the crud that is covering the whole undercarriage is not just the normal gunk as I had initially guessed. The other day when Elk's undercarriage was being washed we find out that its lot more stubborn than any crud/gunk that I have ever came across before, on any of the VWs that I have ever owned.

A little research and recalling of the past with the PO brought this fact to light that all its life in Islamabad with PO, Elk's undercarriage has been sprayed with BLACK/USED/RECYCLED MOBIL OIL to keep it lubricated to avoid suspension squeaks. That recycled mobil oil, coupled with dust over the years, has formed a steel strong layer of crud which wouldn't give in even against soda wash.

Fix - The undercarriage will have to be soda/sand blasted at some point in time, later on.

Two: The CV Boots were torn, all four of them, which topped my priority "To Do" list. Elk being late 182, is IRS setup with CV joints. CV joints on VW 181s bear a part number 113 501 331D. Unfortunately, Elk at some point in time, lost its OG CVs and now bears 68-69 Type2 CVs marked 211 503 331A. I already have fished some NOS CVs in Germany and its all about bringing them in now.

Delaying to replace the torn CV Boots would mean definite damage to the CV joints which already were damaged to a certain repairable degree, (as I found out once I had disassembled). Therefore, I decided to replace the CV Boots and service the CV Joints this weekend in a DIY.

These two write ups helped me all the way to do this servicing job successfully;

1. Tom's VW Pages - CV Joint Maintenance
2. type2.com - CV Joints Maintenance

Started off with removing the passenger side drive shaft. Dis-assembly and cleansing the grease brought to light the damage to the outer end CV Joint outer race which needed repairs - welding/grinding. The other CV Joint was found good.

Got the damaged CV Joint outer race professionally welded and grounded and then came the assembly. Lets have a look at some servicing pictures;

PostSubject: Undercarriage DIY Continues - Replacement of Front Wheel Bearings    socket - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari - Page 3 EmptyWed May 08, 2013 11:21 am

Recently when Elk was thoroughly washed down under, I had checked the wheels for any loose bearings while it was on the washer's lift. The passenger side front wheel and the rear side driver's wheel seemed to have worked up bearings. Thats when the replacement of all four wheel bearings was added to the DIY.

An early start to the morning, provided me with enough time to do the front passenger side wheel bearings. Both bearings, inner (bearing size: 45449/45410) and outer (bearing size: 11749) were produced from my VW stash and are of Hungarian origin. So was the bearing seal, Brazilian origin. Here are a few pictures from the DIY.

The worked up bearings;

PostSubject: Shift Rod Bushing Replacement   socket - Elk - The 1979 Type-182 Mexican Safari - Page 3 EmptyTue May 14, 2013 7:41 am

Undercarriage on Elk needs lots of man hours to be at a level where I could drive Elk with confidence even on the longest of the journeys. Other than the drive terrain, there are many areas where it needs improvement and new parts.

Slowly, I am trying to bring the mechanicals to the level where I could trust every bit of the mechanical side. Over the weekend, I adjusted the valve clearance on Elk for the first time after its first tune up back in October 12 when I acquired it. Cylinder no. 3/4 valves were tighter than .006" specification. Cylinder no. 1/2 were pretty much ok. As a result, Elk runs lot quieter and smoother.

Next up was this sloppy shifter. I knew for all these months that the shifter rod needed bushing thinking that it would have shattered away. But when I got to the task, I was surprised that there was no bushing present at all. Neither on the rod, nor in the tunnel as the shattered pieces might have been, have had there been a bushing at all in the first place. I cursed myself for not doing the job earlier because I already have over half a dozen shifter bushings in my stash (including one NOS German Bushing).

Anyway, here are a couple of pictures; the first picture shows the debris that I pulled out of the tunnel while cleaning the tunnel. Its all but iron chips resulting from internal rusting.

The New Bushing

While at it, I painted the rod as well, which had collected some surface rust.

Once done, I adjusted the Shift Stop Plate as per procedure covered by Rod & Dave's Shift Stop Plate Adjustment Article

Elk might have been sent away to her hideout to accomodate Missionare, my early/lowlight walkthrough bay but it surely isn't forgotten.

Last of its few bits were collected at one spot by a polish friend to be later sent off to me here in Pakistan. Thanks to all the German, Polish and Dutch friends who helped.

Just washed German, Polish, Belgian, French & Bristish soils off of my hands. Elk's treat is all set. All these bits arrived today in the afternoon.

Big thanks to Filip (France/Poland), Mark Goldsmith & John (UK), Arthur Wains (Deutschland), Bob & Frank of BBT for making it all possible.

Elk has remained neglectfully parked for well over two months meanwhile I hunted and bought Missionare, my early bay. During this time, all the parts/accessories have arrived too but I didn't get around to get those fitted mainly due to the fact that I was busy hunting parts for Missionare and sorting out matters which needed immediate attention to keep Missionare on road.

This independence day, finally I got around waking up this sleeping beauty and gave her a thorough clean with a purpose of bringing her to my porch and fitting all those parts that have been hunted for it over the last 10 months.

Here is how it stands:

Elk sporting year correct "scratch/crack less" stock steering wheel (bought in France) with stock turn signal/wiper switches (bought in USA) for the first time in my ownership! It came with a VW Golf wheel when it passed onto me and the turn signal/wiper stalk was non-existent. I had replaced the Golf wheel with an early two spoke bug steering wheel after I had bought it as a temporary fix until I could located the stalk/steering wheel. Stalk was bought in late 2012 and was in storage awaiting the wheel which proved pretty difficult to find in excellent condition. It was eventually located and bought in France earlier this year and had arrived in first week of July to me.

Elk might have been installed with the year correct steering wheel but it still was missing the horn contact/cancelling ring on the steering so despite the fact that the correct wiper/indicator stalk was installed with the stock steering wheel, it wouldn't beep. Had to find this fella for cheap to make it all possible.
