First topic message reminder :

Patina is no more an unfamiliar term to the AC VW community of the country, neither is the 1965 Ratlook Type-1 which bears this nickname.

The story began on Pakwheels.com 1965 Volkswagen Type-1 (Beetle) D.I.Y. Project (o\_!_/o) And is still ongoing with the recent accomplishment of a 2000KM roundtrip to snowy Bhurban. I will update this introductory post later to add more details. For now lets carry on the story here on these dedicated ACVW forums that we've now available.

Stay tuned.

2- Chrome Door Handles (bus)

Patina came with the Hella "B31 VW1" 6V "tief" Horn which was mute (Pictures of the same have been shared already on the PW thread) - reasons of its muteness were unknown but I torn it apart for refurbishment and even the refurbishment didn't help and it stayed mute. Here is the link to the refurbishment post:
Stock Hella "B31 VW1" 6V Horn Refurbishment/Repair/Maintenance - Disassembly

Since I have recently brought in three working 12v OG Hella Horns, yesterday, I went on to put the horn in place. The horn pictured on the left in the above post was selected to be mounted on Patina.

First step was to sort out the Horn wiring as per following 62-67 Horn Wiring Diagram:
Patina - The 1965 "Ratlook" Beetle - Page 2 332057d1322474792-1965-volkswagen-type-1-beetle-d-i-y-project-o-_-_-o-horn2

The horn wiring is one of the very few complex wiring circuits on a VW. To explain it in simplest of words I would rather use even simpler words:

The entire steering column is +12v - that's why it's insulated from the body using two grommets, one at the base where it enters the front wall and the other right under the mounting bracket on the dash.

+12v comes from the fusebox, goes through the horn, then connects to the column (at the tab present at the column base), which carries current to the middle of the steering wheel through a bearing that holds the steering shaft centred inside the steering column.

The brown wire is a ground that connects to the horn contact ring. This wire runs down the center of the steering shaft and has to jump the rubber coupler to ground to the steering box.

If the '62-67 column is insulated from the rest of the car, then the horn should work if its hooked up as shown by the above diagram.

A few minutes exercise resulted in a working horn on Patina which sings in the most melodious tunes on earth.

Even though the pics are somewhat self explanatory but in case there is some explanation required, just ask. All you need to open the stuck hood of a VW Beetle is to have a working angled grinder and its a chore of 5 mins. Here is how it goes.

I might have been busy with Missionare's parts hunt or decorating Elk with its all military bits but haven't forgotten Patina for a minute. Patina is special, its my sons car. It gets what it ought to have for a young driver until my son comes of age to drive it. So here is another bit added to make it more youth worthy; decklid stand offs.

With upgrades, come the curses of going astray from the STOCK. BRM Speedwells need M12x1.5, 25mm bolts to be mounted and I had none. So had to source a complete set that can go with the BRMs.
Patina - The 1965 "Ratlook" Beetle - Page 2 1422468_753122498047030_837429029_n

This set now can be used to BRMs other alloys such as Radars etc. on both Patina as well as on Elk. For Missionare however, I would need a set of M14x1.5, 30mm bolts which I am still hunting as these are NOT cheap.

one of my previously owned bug popped up today on FB. Its a 1969 1500cc Deluxe - MNA 2822. Owned it for a couple of years when I was in Islamabad and sold in 2005/06 to Abbotabad, is still with the same guy. Good to see it in good hands. I could see couple of things that I added still on it, for instance the stainless steel running boards and the tear drop alloys. Though it lost its original 1500cc motor a while back, as told by the current owner.

The first owner of this very bug is the renouned Ex-ISI Chief, General (R) Hameed Gul when he used to be a Captain.

I just ordered a rush delivery of some parts for Missionare but the same seller had the correct oval LHS door hinge mounted mirror too, which happened to be matching with the RHS one currently on Patina so i called it in as well with rest of bits. is ratty but then the whole car is so perfect match to overall look Very Happy
